Ultrasonic scaler for a thorough, comfortable experience

The ultrasonic scaler is used to break down bacterial deposits and plaque and tartar buildups using sound waves with minimal discomfort to the patient. This tool can be used for deep cleanings as well as heavy stains and deposits during regular cleanings. Ultrasonic scalers help create a more comfortable experience for our patients.

High-tech, comfortable Gum Disease Treatment

Dr. Conkle and Dr. Garcia are experienced in treating mild, moderate and severe gum disease using the latest technology, including advanced lasers, for a comfortable and minimally invasive experience.

Periodontal exam

Gum disease patients come to the office every three to four months for a thorough periodontal exam using a periodontal probe. During the exam, the doctor will measure the depths of gum pockets around your teeth in order to assess the health of your gums.

  • Scaling and root planingCleanings & Gum Disease Treatment in Laguna Hills

Full-mouth scaling and root planing is a critical step in gum disease treatment. Scaling is the removal of tartar (also known as calculus) from the teeth. Our staff use a high-tech ultrasonic scaler for gently removing major calculus, followed by hand scaling, in order to ensure the complete removal of calculus.

  • Gentle, precise laser gum treatmentCleanings & Gum Disease Treatment in Laguna Hills

Dr. Conkle and Dr. Garcia use a top-of-the-line laser called the BioLase iLase for treating gum disease. After full-mouth scaling and root planing, the laser is used to disinfect the gum pocket and remove the diseased surface gum tissue. This cleans out the infection and stimulates the reattachment of the gum tissue to the teeth. Lasers allow for a comfortable, minimally invasive treatment with a much shorter healing time as compared to invasive procedures.

  • Eliminating the bacteria with antibiotic therapyCleanings & Gum Disease Treatment

Following scaling, root planing and laser treatment, ARESTIN® antibiotic therapy is used to further treat gum disease as needed by killing the bacteria that are at the root of the problem. ARESTIN contains microspheres, which are tiny bead-like particles that are invisible to the naked eye, filled with the antibiotic minocycline hydrochloride. The antibiotic is released over time to help kill the bacteria and heal your gums more effectively.

How does Gum Disease come about?

Gum disease is largely attributed to poor oral hygiene, which leads to the overgrowth of bacteria in plaque and calculus on the teeth, which in turn infects the gums. Other factors can include smoking, misaligned teeth, hormonal changes, stress, diabetes, poor nutrition, cancer and cancer treatment.

Signs of gum disease include red, swollen or tender gums, gums that bleed while or after you brush your teeth, persistent halitosis (or bad breath), a persistent bad taste in the mouth, teeth moving or becoming loose, receding gums and changes to your bite.

If you suspect that you have gum disease, contact Saddleback Dentistry right away to schedule an exam with the doctor. Early treatment is vital when it comes to preserving your gums and teeth.

Treating Severe Gum Disease

Dr. Garcia and Dr. Conkle are skilled at treating advanced gum disease cases (periodontitis) with thorough, comprehensive treatment. The doctors combine scaling and root planing, laser treatment and  antibiotic treatment as needed to aggressively handle the condition. They will meet with patients regularly to examine their gums in order to ensure that the condition is totally cleared up.
